Lukashenko: It is critical not only to harvest potatoes but also to preserve them

KIROVSK DISTRICT, 28 August (BelTA) – The key objective for the potato sector is twofold: to successfully harvest the crop and to ensure its storage through to the next harvest, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said during a meeting to discuss potato production in Belarus, BelTA has learned.

“To date, our main task is to harvest the crop [potatoes] and preserve it. What is the situation with storage facilities in our country? Are there enough of them? Including for the seed reserve,” Aleksandr Lukashenko asked.

The president gave an instruction to pay the closest attention to the quality of the crops being stored for the off-season: “If the curing period is not maintained (scientists will speak about this), nothing will survive. And this is our gold reserve. Moreover, as recent years have shown, it is not only a food reserve but also a currency reserve.”

“Perhaps we should process a portion of the potato harvest into dry goods such as mashed potato powder, flakes, starch, and chips,” the head of state suggested.

The president also instructed to calculate how much frozen french fries are needed, for example, for the Mak.by restaurants.
